Simple Ways to Improve Your Workspace

Refine your desk area and instantly improve your productivity

Start

When lockdown started, we were told to stay put.

In addition to grappling with the idea of staying at home indefinitely, many of us were also expected to work from home. We had to quickly figure out how to create a perfect little space in our homes where we could set up office.

Some people decided that once breakfast was done, the kitchen table was the best place to stay and carry on with work tasks. Others opted for the lounge – although working from a comfortable couch may not have been the greatest idea. But some were lucky enough to have an extra room to work from.

Personally speaking,

Getting used to the work-from-home thing did not come naturally. In the beginning, my day consisted of constantly moving back and forth from my bedroom, to the lounge and to the dining area. This carried on until I finally discovered that the best spot for me was in one of the bedrooms.

Although setting up a quiet, comfortable place to work is key – at the end of the day, where you are sitting doesn’t really matter. As long as your desk and work area is set up in such a way as to give you the best opportunity to be focused and productive, you’re good to go.

Below are just a few suggestions on little ways to help you improve your workstation. Although lockdown is starting to ease in certain areas of the world, and some have started going back to their physical places of work, these tried and tested tips and tricks will work well in both home and communal office spaces.

Natural Light

This might be a no-brainer, but since you are working indoors most of the day, it is important to have a source of natural light coming into your space. If your work consists of staring at a computer screen for most of the day, sometimes having to sit in an office with artificial light for hours on end may cause eye-strain. This could lead to headaches, tiredness and an overall loss of productivity. Many studies have shown that being exposed to natural light during working hours not only improves concentration and short-term memory, but also helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake schedule. Also, having the opportunity to open up a window to let in some fresh air is always a bonus.

Diffuser

A room diffuser might be great to assist you with getting in some good, quality air. Diffusers are known to elevate your mood and relieve stress while setting a calming atmosphere. Breathing in quality air while sitting at your desk throughout the day will assist in reducing anxiety during work hours. While diffusers can be used on a fragrance-free basis, it might be worthwhile to invest in one that uses essential oils. According to a 2020 online article, rosemary, basil and peppermint are just a few essential oils that would assist in keeping you focused and productive.

Candles

Like diffusers, buying a few scented candles to place on your desk might be another great option. Not only will the candle add some warmth and cosiness to your area, but the aroma coming from a fragrant burning candle is known to stimulate the part of the brain which is connected to memory and mood. Be sure to pick out a candle that pleases your sense of smell.

Plants

Indoor plants not only brings the beauty of nature into your home, but they are a great way of improving the quality of air around your desk, which will assist in increasing your attention span and creativity. Indoor plants are always readily available at your nearest nursery, so be sure to have a look at see what is in stock.
